SUMMARY:Darling Family Day: Tree Planting Ceremony to Honor the Darlings
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a very special tree planting ceremony open to the public to honor the Darling Family and their many land gifts in Zoar Valley! \nHelp us say thank you for land gifts to the public over six decades by Herbert Sr. & Bertha Darling\, Herbert Jr. and Jane Darling\, and the Darling Family. Their generous land gifts in Zoar also helped form nature preserves by The Nature Conservancy and The Nature Sanctuary Society of Western New York. \nWhile many people have worked to preserve and protect Zoar Valley\, it all started with the gifts to The People of New York State made in the spirit of conservation and sharing access to the great outdoors embodied by the Darling family.  \nHerbert Darling\, Jr. and the Darling Family have also played a major role in the conservation work being done to restore the American Chestnut tree to Eastern forests through their work at the William White American Chestnut Plantation in Zoar Valley. \nThis event is open to the public. Come out to Zoar to say thank you to the Darlings! There will be live music by Jane Hereth. \nWe’re planting two White Oak trees\, both generously donated by Chestnut Ridge Nursery\, Inc.\, www.chestnutridgenursery.com \nThe ceremony is next to the Ross Pond Trailhead parking lot at Vail and Unger Roads in the Town of Collins.

SUMMARY:Charles Burchfield Day: In the Footsteps of Charles Burchfield
DESCRIPTION:Art in the forest! We’ll take a walk in Charles Burchfield’s “Big Woods” for en plein air painting/sketching guided by local artist Thomas Annear and accompanied by Nancy Weekly\, Burchfield Scholar at the Burchfield Penney Art Center and author of “Charles E. Burchfield: The Sacred Woods.” Bring your own art materials of choice\, sketchpad or travel easel\, and portable chair if desired. We’ll be creating art independently (not a classroom outing). \nPre-registration required. Please register below.\nRegistered attendees meet at the Holcomb Pond trailhead on Vail Road in Collins. \nOUTING LEVEL: Short and easy walk over mostly level terrain on a well-established trail. Footwear for a trail walk and long pants recommended. Please bring a sack lunch\, water\, and snacks\, an outdoor seat if desired\, and anything that makes you comfortable in the outdoors – hat\, sunscreen\, insect repellent\, etc. \nBurchfield discovered Zoar Valley in the 1920’s shortly after moving to Buffalo. He fondly named the forests in and around the Gowanda canyons “the Big Woods.” A pantheist at heart\, Burchfield regarded forests as sacred spaces\, and Zoar certainly held this draw for him. Burchfield returned to the forests of Zoar over more than 40 years to paint expressions of his relationship with nature in what he described as his “forest interior” works:  “Flame of Spring” (1948)\, “Light Coming into a Woods” (1954)\, “Arctic Owl and Winter Moon” (1960)\, “Eye of God in a Woods” (1949; reworked in1962 as “Presence of God in a Woods”)\, “Clatter of Crows in Spring Woods” (1949)\, “Fires of Spring in Big Woods” (1951)\, and “Hemlock in November” (1947-1966) (the last painting Burchfield worked on)\, among Burchfield’s many other works in and around Zoar Valley. Burchfield also expressed Zoar’s beauty in viewscapes: “March Sunlight” (1926-1934)\, “The Cliff” (1928)\, “March Day at Gowanda” (1926-1933)\, and “Lavender and Old Lace” (1939-1947)\, among others. \nNOT TO BE MISSED!  Three of Burchfield’s paintings in Zoar Valley are currently on display as part of the “Poetic Passages: Burchfield from the Munson Museum of Art” exhibit at the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo\, NY\, through July 27\, 2025: “Flame of Spring” (1948)\, an inspired forest interior painted in the Big Woods\, “Lace Gables” (1935)\, an ornate Gothic farmhouse that enchanted Burchfield so much he returned to paint it several times\, and “Village in the Swamps” (1930)\, a late evening view looking down over the Village of Gowanda as Burchfield emerged on a ridge from a day of painting in the Big Woods\, described by Burchfield as his favorite painting completed that year. “Poetic Passages” is a rare opportunity to see the entire Burchfield collection of the Munson Museum of Art\, along with select Burchfield Penney collection sketches. The exhibit is\, an exuberant celebration of Burchfield’s lifetime of art across each of his style periods\, including one of his masterpieces\, “The Sphinx and the Milky Way” (1946). \n[gravityform id=”10″ title=”false”]\nThomas Annear. Originally from Alexandria\, Virginia\, Tom Annear lived and worked as an artist in a variety of places before moving to Fredonia\, New York in June 2000. Since graduating with a BFA in painting from Rutgers University in 1995\, his work shifted from political and abstract pieces to paintings that focus on contemporary uses of our environment and a strong sense of place. \nOver the past 25 years\, Tom has been creating a series of plein air paintings\, “Landscape of Change\,” that celebrate the beauty and history of local agricultural communities. Through these works\, he has sought to capture the unique geography\, weather patterns\, and natural resources of Western New York. Increasingly\, issues such as conservation\, local food networks\, and sustainability have become central to his work. \nFor more information and to explore Tom Annear’s many painting journeys\, please visit www.ThomasAnnear.com.

SUMMARY:HIKE - Geology Day
DESCRIPTION:***THERE ARE JUST A FEW SPOTS LEFT ON THIS HIKE. PLEASE VISIT www.springvillearts.org TO REGISTER FOR THIS HIKE. \nGeologist Ray Vaughan will lead a much-anticipated hike through the soaring canyons of the Zoar Valley gorge along South Branch Cattaraugus Creek\, one of Western New York’s most dramatic stratigraphic geologic columns. We’ll explore the predominantly shale bedrock that formed hundreds of millions of years ago when Western New York was under a shallow inland sea. The hike will take us past a shear zone where an ancient fold serves as an example of how bedrock responds to tectonic stress. We’ll also learn about the evolution of the gorge since the last glaciers retreated from our region some 13\,000 years ago. This outing continues our Summer-long celebration of Zoar Valley in conjunction with the Art of Zoar Valley III exhibit at the Springville Center for the Arts. \nRegistered hikers meet at Forty Road parking area in Gowanda. \nHIKE LEVEL: Moderate but long 4-mile round-trip creek walk hike that requires stamina and sure-footedness. Hikers should wear hiking quality water shoes or hiking footwear and be prepared to walk in water and ford the creek at least four times in up to calf or thigh-deep water. Bring hiking poles for the creek crossings if desired. \nSwimming is not permitted. \nPlease bring a sack lunch\, plenty of water\, snacks\, and anything that makes you comfortable – hat\, sunscreen\, insect repellent\, etc. \nWe will bag and carry out any litter we find along the way\, as a way to give back to the environment and the organizations that gave special permission for this outing: The Nature Sanctuary Society of Western New York\, The Nature Conservancy\, and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. \nThis outing will be rescheduled or canceled with notice if the creek water level is deemed too high/rising for safe crossings. \nPre-registration required. Please register below. ***THERE ARE JUST A FEW SPOTS REMAINING ON THIS HIKE. PLEASE VISIT www.springvillearts.org TO REGISTER FOR THIS EVENT. \n[gravityform id=”9″ title=”false”]\nRaymond C. Vaughan\, Ph.D.\, P.G.\, is a professional geologist and environmental scientist in Buffalo. Ray is semi-retired\, does some consulting\, and has worked on local environmental issues with Clean Air Coalition and others. He and his wife Sheila live in Hamburg\, New York.  Earlier in his career\, Ray worked for 33 years in research and development in Niagara Falls and Buffalo\, then worked as an environmental scientist in the NYS Attorney General’s Office from 2000-2012. He has served since 1997 on the West Valley Citizen Task Force which advises NYSERDA and the U.S. Department of Energy on clean-up issues at the West Valley nuclear waste site. From 1980 to 1999 he served on the Town of Hamburg Conservation Advisory Board. He currently sits on the boards of the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences (Buffalo Museum of Science and Tifft Nature Preserve) and the Nature Sanctuary Society of WNY\, and he formerly served on the Western New York Land Conservancy board from 1991 to 2002. Ray has a wide range of interests including WNY history\, on which he has presented at conferences in Buffalo\, Lewiston\, and Edinburgh\, Scotland.  Canoeing\, hiking\, and sailing are favorite activities\, and if he can combine hiking with outcrop and the murmur of flowing water\, so much the better – which means you’ll often find him in one of Western New York’s beautiful bedrock gorges.

SUMMARY:HIKE - Nature Preserves Day: In the Footsteps of Anna Botsford Comstock
DESCRIPTION:We’re kicking off the Summer long series of outings in conjunction with the Art of Zoar Valley III exhibit by hiking the trails at Deer Lick Conservation Area to identify flora and fauna. Bring your knowledge or your smartphone apps like iNaturalist and eBird to explore the preserve. \nDeer Lick is a National Natural Landmark owned and stewarded by The Nature Conservancy. Our biodiversity efforts will contribute to the decades of conservation work in Zoar by The Nature Conservancy and The Nature Sanctuary Society in maintaining and protecting several nature preserves in Zoar Valley. \nThis is also a way to honor the legacy of Anna Botsford Comstock (1854-1930)\, a naturalist\, scientific illustrator\, scholar\, author\, first female Cornell University Professor\, and early leader of the Nature Study Movement who grew up a stone’s throw from Zoar Valley in Otto where the outdoor explorations of her childhood sparked her life’s work furthering conservation of the natural world. \nPRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED. Go to Events – Springville Center for the Arts \nRegistered hikers meet at noon at the Deer Lick trailhead kiosk on Point Peter Road located about one-half mile past the Forty Road turn on the left side of Point Peter Road. \nHIKE LEVEL: Easy to moderate on marked trails. We’ll split up into small groups across the various trails\, so you can pick a short\, easy walk or a moderate\, longer hike. \nSturdy footwear and long pants recommended. Hiking poles if desired. Please bring a sack lunch\, water\, snacks\, and anything that makes you comfortable in the woods – hat\, insect repellent\, etc.
